Symphony League

On December 21, 1930, in a small upstairs room in Germania Hall at Fourth and Main Streets in Mansfield, Prof. Eugene Weinberger raised his baton, and the Mansfield Symphony was born.  At the conclusion of this first concert, Atty. George Biddle said "No greater distinction could come to Mansfield than that it should have and support a good symphony.  It is a civic responsibility."

Nearly 80 years later, one of the premiere small budget orchestras in the nation, the Mansfield Symphony, boasts a history of providing truly incredible symphonic music to our community.

The fraternity of conductors for the Symphony is a relatively small and elite one, having only nine members who have created a strong foundation of artistic excellence, and we salute these extraordinary men.

Eugene Weinberger 1930-1935
Joseph Pival 1946-1949
Donald Tennant 1949-1950
Ted Tatgenhorst 1950-1952
Lazlo Krauz 1953-1954
Robert Cronquist 1954-1977
Jeff Holland Cook 1978-1997
Andrew Sewell 1997-2002

At the end of this season, we will bid farewell to Robert Franz.  Maestro Franz has most certainly led the orchestra to new heights that, perhaps, it has never before reached.  While the national climate for symphony orchestras is a precarious one, the Mansfield Symphony continues to serve our community with ground-breaking partnerships and educational opportunities, fast becoming a model for organizations of our size.  As we embark upon the next chapter in the symphony's history, we begin a two year search for our new music director.  The 2010-11 season will feature a series of guest conductors from which we hope to select our finalists, who will share the 2011-12 season.

Your orchestra continues to add to the rich history that it was founded upon, and we ask you to please consider a gift this year.  Together, we will celebrate the past and welcome the future.

HAPPY 80th ANNIVERSARY!
